Abstract

Key Words: Translation, idioms, idiomatic expression, the fault in our stars novel In translation, translation idiomatic expression is still a serious challenge for translator and foreign learners to commuicate the real meaning and the accurately meaning of idiomatic expression in source language, because idiom or idiomatic expression always conveys difficult meaning because the meaning is different from the meaning of the each words. This study focus on describing the strategies and analyzing the accuracy of translation that applied by the translator in translating idiomatic expression in The Fault In Our Stars novel. There are two objectives of this research. The first is classifying the strategies that applied by the translator. And the second is analyzed the accuracy level of translating the idiomatic expression in The Fault In Our Stars novel. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research which focues on description. The whole data analyzed the strategies to translating idiomatic expression in The Fault In Our Stars novel based on Baker’s strategy and Nababan’s prespective to analyzed the accuracy of idiomatic translation in transalting the novel. In collecting the data the researcher used documentation by list the sentence that consist idiomatic expression in The Fault In Our Stars novel. The result of this research, the researcher found 147 idiomatic expression in the novel by using 4 translation strategies that applied by the translator, they are; translation using similar meaning and form, translation using similar meaning but dissimar form, translation by paraphrase and translation by ommision. And it was found 89 out of 147 idiomatic expression that consist the accurate meaning, and 38 and 20 have been failed to achive the accuracy because they are included of two characteristic, there is difference of meaning between the source text and the translated text. According to the explanation above, the reseracher recommends other researcher to develop this research in deeper, futrher, and better technique, should not only focus on identifying the strategies that used in translating idiomatic expression, but also can focus on procedure of transaltation itself, the idiom’s quality, and all of aspect about the idioms translation that can deeply done.
