Abstract

Key Word : Irony, Sarcasm and Speech Figurative language is language which employs various figure of speech. Figure of speech make language significant, moving and fascinating. Some examples are metaphor, hyperbole, simile, irony, sarcasm, etc. In delivering speech, speakers often use figurative language which is one of the strategies to attract the attention of the audiences. Speech is public speaking activity which is generally in the form of formal conversation carried out by speaker to express his opinion, or to provide overview of important thing or an event and must be discussed to provide understanding or information to the audiences. In this research the researcher will be focusing on two categories of figurative language that are irony and sarcasm. Irony is result from the contrast between the actual meaning of a word or statement and the suggestion of another meaning and sarcasm is a type of language that contains offensive teasing or sarcasm. The kind of this research is library research with content analysis method by using sociological approach. The data was obtained from Dalia Mogahed’s speech entitled “What it’s Like to be a Muslim in America” by using irony and sarcasm theories of Perrine and Camp. The researcher observed the speech from the video and transcript to find the data. From the analysis the researcher found figurative language of irony and sarcasm in that speech. There are15 data that contains irony and sarcasm on Dalia Mogahed’s speech entitled “What it is Like to be a Muslim in America” are categorized into verbal irony (3), situational irony (2), propositional sarcasm (2), lexical sarcasm (5), like prefixed sarcasm (2) and illocutionary sarcasm (1). Figurative language related with connotative meaning that will explain the explicit meaning that contains in the irony and sarcasm that found in that speech. It can be conclude that adding some figurative language especially in irony and sarcasm will make the speech more interested to the audience.
