Abstract

Keywords: Learning style, Vocabulary mastery In teaching English there are four components; phonology, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Generally the objective of teaching English as a foreign language or a second language is to make students easier to understand and use the English language well and correctly. Students can master English ability if student vocabulary mastery is good, in the meaning of one of the essential components to learning English correctly is mastering vocabulary. Vocabulary is all the words that a person knows or uses, and vocabulary mastery is the numbers of words that mastered by the students. In learning English, not all students have the same learning style, their learning styles vary with their respective characteristics obtained from innate and habit. Learning styles are ways or conditions in which students can be effective in perceive, processing, storing and recall what they learn. There are three kinds of learning style, visual learning style, auditory learning style, and kinaesthetic learning style. Visual students tend to learn through seeing or reading, auditory students tend to learn through listening, and kinaesthetic students tend to learning by doing. The research problem in this research are 1) Is there any differences in vocabulary mastery between kinesthetic students and non-kinesthetic students in SMP Islam Terpadu Al-Imron Pragaan Sumenep? and 2) How significant is the different between kinesthetic students vocabulary mastery and non-kinesthetic students vocabulary mastery in SMP Islam Terpadu Al-Imron Pragaan Sumenep?. So, the researcher formulates the research objective of study as follows: 1) To know is there any differences in vocabulary mastery between kinaesthetic students and non-kinaesthetic students in SMP Islam Terpadu Al-Imron Pragaan Sumenep and 2) To measure how significant is the different between kinaesthetic students vocabulary mastery and non-kinaesthetic students vocabulary mastery in SMP Islam Terpadu Al-Imron Pragaan Sumenep. This study uses quantitative research using objective measurements to collect numerical data that is used to answer questions or test the specified hypothesis. This study used a ex post facto design. The population in this study were eighth grade students of SMP Islam Terpadu Al-Imron Pragaan Sumenep. The researcher used the simple random sampling as the sample technique and selected 24 students of class VIII A as the kinesthetic class and 24 students of class VIII B as the non-kinesthetic class. The research instrument used a test, questionnaire and documentations. T-test is used to analyze the data collected in this study, used to determine the level of significance of the results of the t-test. The result data of kinesthetic class students has an average difference of 80.4, while for the non-kinesthetic class it is 58.54. In addition, the calculation of the significance test (t-test) obtained level () = 0.05 so that the value of tcount > ttable (1.768 > 0.055), meaning that there is a significant influence between learning styles on kinesthetic and non-kinesthetic students' vocabulary mastery. It is recommended for English teachers to pay attention to each student's learning style, because recognizing student learning styles can help students to further improve vocabulary mastery which will also be related to interest in learning English.
