Abstract
Key Word: Interference, Phonology Interference is common phenomenon occurs in bilinguals due to the influences of the use of one language into another language. Interference can occur at the phonological level in the using of phonetic system of the first language to the target language. This is also happens to the pronunciation of English by 2nd semester students of English Teaching Learning Program at IAIN Madura. They bring the elements of their mother tongue to produce English. This research aims to analyze the form of Madurese phonological interference toward English, to find out the types of Madurese phonological interference toward English and to describe the factors affect on Madurese phonological interference toward English uttered by 2nd semester students of English Teaching Learning Program at IAIN Madura This methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subject on this research were all 2nd semester students of English Teaching Learning Program at IAIN Madura who has background as Madurese language speaker. The data were gotten from the observation of teaching learning process in the Pronunciation class, interview and videos assignment on Pronunciation subject. The data of students’ pronunciation were transcribe into phonetic transcription and compared with the standard pronunciation based on Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary. The result of this research showed that there are 87 addition of sounds, 92 omission of sounds and 443 replacement of sounds that have been classified into 4 form of interference namely, sound addition interference, sound omission interference, sound replacement interference and sound combination interference. The data also showed there are 4 types of phonological interference based on Weinreich classification namely, under-differentiation of phonemes, overdifferentiation of phonemes, reinterpretation of distinction and actual phone substitution. The factors affect interference on students pronunciation are students multilingualism background, the intensity in using the target language, disloyalty to the target language and carrying the mother tongue habits. It is suggested for students to speak in English more often and pay attention to phonological aspects in order to have clear and good pronunciation and for the educators are suggested to be able to provide feedback on the errors that occur in students pronunciation.
