Abstract

Keywords: morphological process, word formation, Slang, Jaenglish Language, Twitter. A language becomes one of the elements that are certainly involved each time practice of communication occurred in society. The use of slang replace any forms of standard English with the presence of social media. This does not rule out the emergence of 'internet slang' due to the massive number of those users. This kind of slang satisfies the communicative needs of certain social groups. In this case one of morphology field which is word formation, comes from changing the meaning of words and sounds, removing one or more letters in a word, including word abbreviations. In this study, the aims of the research is to identify the types of word formation that occur in the slang words of Jaenglish language and to describe the word formation processes of slang words found in the Jaenglish language. The researcher used qualitative research with the research design was content analysis. The source used in this research is Tweets uploaded by Jaehyung Park which contain the slang words of Jaenglish Language to get data. While the other sources were journals, articles, books, and previous scripts that could complete the main data. The researcher used observation and documentation in collecting data. As for content analysis used in data analysis. The researcher analyzed tweets containing slang in Jaenglish Language uploaded by Jaehyung Park himself and other Twitter users that have been trending in Twitter for last three years since 2021. While the researcher used George Yule theories about the type of word formation process. The results of this research indicate that there are 25 terms found in the Jaenglish Language. Furthermore, only 6 of the 10 types of word-formation processes are found in Jaenglish Language. The type of word formation process that was not found were coinage, back formation, conversion, and derivation processes. Then, the most dominant type of word formation process is the acronym found in 8 slang terms. Followed by the type of compounding process found in 6 slang terms, the borrowing process found in 4 slang terms, the clipping and multiple process found in 3 slang terms, and the blending process found in one word term. In summary, the Jaenglish Language on Twitter contains a variety of slang terms which formation has gone through a series of morphological processes and are aiming to strengthen solidarity within a community, free from informal rules, and provide new and creative language styles for users to communicate.
