Abstract

Keyword: Mispronunciation, Interdental Sounds. As a foreign language learner, it usually has difficulty in getting the correct pronunciation, and even mispronunciation must have been made. Mispronunciation means that there is a discrepancy in the articulation of pronunciation made by foreign language learners, either from the manner or place of articulation. This is because there are some differences in sounds between first language and foreign language such as Interdental sounds [θ] and [ð] in English, but Indonesian does not have this sound. Interdental sounds made by the tip of the tongue between the front teeth, means there should be a little space between the upper and lower teeth, but in fact, many of students did not give space between the upper and lower teeth when pronounced the interdental sounds. There are two types of research focuses in this study. The first is about how the members of English Club of Yasbir Students (ECOYS) pronounced the interdental sounds, and the second is about what factors influencing the mispronunciation of interdental sounds pronounced by the members of ECOYS. To describe how the interdental sounds were pronounced and the factors influenced that mispronunciation, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative research design. This research conducted at Yayasan Asy Syahidul Kabir Sumber Batu, Blumbungan, Larangan, Pamekasan. The research informants were members of English Club of Yasbir Students (ECOYS) Pamekasan. While the data collected from observation, interview, and documentation such as reading a text by using audio recording. The results showed that ECOYS members changed the interdental sounds [θ] and [ð] to the first available language sounds that had the closest phonetics such as /d/ and /t/. The sound [ð] is mostly changed to the sound /t/ and /d/, and the sound [θ] is changed to the sound /t/. While the factors that influence the mispronunciation of interdental sounds are; the first is English is not written phonetically just like Indonesian, the second is lack of practice, and the third is less of knowledge.
