Abstract
Keywords: Semantics, Connotative meaning This research aims to analyze connotative meaning, focusing on positive, negative and neutral connotatives in song lyrics. The researcher decided to use positive, negative and neutral connotations in the song lyrics, because the song lyrics are the sentences. When listening to songs/music, some people not only listen to the song to entertain or have fun but also to provide several explicit or implicit messages that appear in the song's lyrics, each lyric provides several meanings contained in the song. And of course it refers to real life, when several people listen to the song, sometimes the song lyrics poured out by the singer match the feelings of the listener/music lover. As previously mentioned, the researcher intends to investigate the positive, negative and neutral connotative meanings contained in the 5 songs sung by Ed Sheeran on the Devided album, what the positive, negative and neutral connotative meanings are. Researchers use a qualitative approach with content analysis research type. The main source used is 5 Ed Sheeran album devide songs to find out the data needed. Meanwhile, secondary sources are journals, articles, books and theses related to this research to complement primary data. In collecting data, researchers used observation and documentation. Combining, sampling, coding, reducing, concluding, and narrating are used to analyze data. Researchers conducted research with the title "Analysis connotative meaning in the lyrics of the song by Ed Sheeran on the album "devide". Furthermore, the researcher found data relating to various connotative meanings consisting of 13 connotative meanings and 5 positive connotative meanings, 6 negative connotative meanings, and 4 neutral connotative meanings. With these findings, the public knows more about the use of positive, negative and neutral connotative meanings contained in song lyrics in order to avoid misunderstandings about the content of the outpourings sung by the singer of the song and so that they are not just enjoyed.
