Abstract

Keywords: Language’s Social Stratification, Social Stratification,The Prince and The Pauper Novel This research is started with individual treatment differences to other people based on their social status in society. This is called social stratification. Generally, someone who has a higher social status will be treated well while someone who has a lower social status is treated badly. This is demonstrated by human behavior and their speech as different forms of treatment toward other people. Therefore, language’s social stratification is important to explore. In fact, it is very important to study language’s social stratification as a form of moral cultivation so that we can treat other people well in order to create a good order in society. This research uses The Prince and The Pauper Novel written by Mark Twain as the research object. This novel contains social stratification experienced by the characters which is reflected in language that they used. Therefore, this research is still worthy of being studied in dept regarding the meaning of the text and the context of the novel in the realm of social stratification. Regarding with this, the researcher has two research problems to be examine, namely the types of social stratification reflected in language expression in The Prince and The Pauper Novel by using Parsons’ social stratification theory as well as the function of language’s social stratification in this novel using Gorys Keraf’s theory. To support this research, the researcher uses sociolinguistics approach and categorized as library research using Krippendorf’s content analysis as the analysis method. The main source was taken from sentence fragments containing language’s social stratification. To collect the data, the researcher uses documentation. From the analysis of this study, the researcher found four types of social stratification reflected in Mark Twain’s The Prince and The Pauper Novel based on Parsons’ theory. They are achievements, possessions, authority and power. Based on data analysis, the researcher found 14 data. The data consist of achievements (2 data), possessions (5 data), authority (3 data) and power (4 data). The researcher also found four functions of language’s social stratification reflected in this novel based on Gorys Keraf’s theory. They are tool to declare self expression, tool of communication, tool for social integration and adaptation as well as tool for social control. Based on data analysis, the researcher found 14 data. The data consist of tool to declare self expression (2 data), tool of communication (5 data), tool for social integration and adaptation (3 data) and tool for social control (4 data). This research gives recommendation in order do not differentiate someone status and do not treat others badly.
