Abstract

Keywords: contrastive analysis, sentence structure, English complex sentence, Javanese complex sentence Language is a tool for communication. Every country in this world has their own language with their own uniqueness. One of the most popular language is English. In Indonesia, English is known as foreign language. While in Indonesia, there are a lot of bahasa daerah or vernacular language and Javanese is one of it. Sentence structure of each language may have similarities and differences. To find out the similarities and differences, this study used contrastive analysis, to compare each language complex sentence structure. In this research, the researcher used contrastive anlysis method and library research as the design of the research. It’s used since the researcher get the data from various library information such as books, scientific journals, encyclopedia, and document. The main data are from English and Javanese textbook for 12th grade. Also the others related source or literature such as book, journal, article, previous study, and etc.While the theories, this study used English Sentence Analysis book by Marjolijn Verspoor and Kim Sauter and for the Javanese used Tata Bahasa Jawa Mutakhir book by Wedhawati et.al. to analyse the complex sentence structure of each language. The researcher used observation and documentation in collecting data. The result of this research there are 50 complex sentence of each language. The English complex sentence there are 7 subcategories there are dependent clause as adverb from 30 sentences, 6 sentences as direct object, 2 sentences as subject, 2 sentences as object, 12 sentences as noun modifier, 5 sentences as subject attribute, and 2 sentences as object attribute. While in Javanese language there are 2 main categories the first is syntactic - structural relationship with 30 sentences and the second is syntactic – semantic relationship with 48 sentences (sentences in the first type can be included in the second type). While the similarities there are 2 points and the differences there are 4 points.
