Abstract
Keywords: Vowel, Diphthong, and Pronunciation. Pronunciation is the first impression that the listener will capture when starting a conversation. In fact, people is going to judge the speaker’s ability to speak English from how the speaker pronounce words that are relatively easy. It means that the listener is going to understand what the speaker means when the pronunciation is correct. Vowel and Diphthong are segmental features of pronunciation that commonly difficult to be pronounced by Indonesian students. In line with construction diphthong in Madura, for some words, such as “air”, vowels /a/ and /i/ are clearly stated to be /air/, not /ayr/’. The sound of /i/ is stated clearly and does not changes to /y/. That means /a/ and /i/ do not act as diphthongs. So that many students feel oddly with contruction diphthong in English especially on English Teaching Learning Program at IAIN Madura. The majority of students are Madurese and most of them graduated from Islamic boarding school. This research has two research objectives; 1) to know whether there is a correlation between knowledge of vowel and diphthong with pronunciation ability, 2) to measure the significance between two variables. The research method used in this research is a quantitative approach, and the research design is correlational research. The instruments used for both variables are tests. The study population is the fifth semester of English Teaching Learning Program students of IAIN Madura, and sample used is total sample because the the subject is less than 100 people, namely 63 students. So, it is better to take all of them. The data analysis applied for this research is Pearson product moment correlation. Because this research used statictical parametric, so it must be checked the classical assumption test firstly. The result of normality test showed that the data normally distributed. Then, the finding reveals a correlation between students’ knowledge of phonetic symbol on vowel and diphthong with their pronunciation ability of English Teaching Learning Program at IAIN Madura. It is proved by comparing the result of rcount with rtable. The result of rcount is higher than rtable (0.407 > 0.254). the value of rcount includes the third interpretation (0.40 – 0.599), and the interpretation is the correlation between X and Y variables are sufficient. Therefore, the researcher concludes that knowledge of phonetic symbol on vowel and diphthong sounds significantly correlate with pronunciation ability. However, the alternative hypothesis is accepted, and the null hypothesis is rejected. In conclusion, both variables measured by the researcher had correlation each other. If students have a good knowledge on phonetic symbol on vowel and diphthong, so their pronunciation ability will be fluently, and vice versa. But some of them cannot pronounce /a/ and /ͻ/ of the word “Sow” and “Hot” also “Pair” and “Sure”. They did not know how to differentiate among of them and they supposed that the phonetic transcription of them are same even. It may be caused by their regional dialect that the written is surely same with the spoken one. Also, Diphtong of /eə/ and /ʊə/ do not exist in Madurese diphthong, so that they still confused how to spell both of words.
