Abstract

Writing is one of the four basic skills in teaching and learning which must be mastered by the students and taught well by the teachers. Writing is a language in the form, it is used to convey information about something and to to express the idea. Writing essay is language skill that difficult for the students because essay is a short piece of writing that tells a person’s thoughts. So that, the reader can understand what the writer tells, especially in writing essay. One of the difficulties for students writer is discovering ideas and getting started. The students find the writing task very difficult. Like learning problem, writing is a serious problem to the students as student progress in their studies, they are expected to write about what they have learnt in their classes. However, if the students do not develop and improve their writing techniques, they will unable to keep up with their level. There are two research problems of this research. Firstly, What are the students’ difficulties in writing an essay .Secondly, How do the students overcome the difficulties in writing an essay . This study is descriptive research using a qualitative approach, the resarcher used triangulation for validity of the data and focus on the third semester of TBI in E class academic year 2019/2020, on this class there are 36 students, by using interview and documentation as data collection. Based on tool the research the students of third semester in E class of TBI, some of the them got some difficulties to make a good an esaay, among the difficulties they are difficult to write parts of essay, not using the pattern of organization of the essay, getting ideas, connecting the first paragraph to the second paragraph, not writing by good structure, determining the topic and create the thesis sentence, developing a sentence or idea, choosing the term of language and structure, not using the vocabulary and tenses well. And the overcome difficulties in writing an essay sucha as practicing writing skill, memorizing the vocabulary, studying the grammar and tenses, improving knowledge, reading may referencess, increasing the writing structure, using an English language . Based on this research, the researcher can givesome suggestion. For students, the students should have high motivation to learn writing essay, to increase their ability about writing. the suggestion for the researcher, the researcher more understand to make a good essay to become as add reference next researcher. Menulis adalah salah satu dari empat keterampilan dasar dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang harus dikuasai oleh siswa dan diajarkan dengan baik oleh para guru. Menulis adalah bahasa dalam bentuk, digunakan untuk menyampaikan informasi tentang sesuatu dan untuk mengekspresikan ide. Menulis esai adalah keterampilan bahasa yang sulit bagi siswa karena esai adalah tulisan pendek yang menceritakan pemikiran seseorang. Sehingga, pembaca dapat memahami apa yang diceritakan penulis, terutama dalam penulisan esai. Salah satu kesulitan bagi siswa penulis adalah menemukan ide dan memulai. Siswa merasa tugas menulis sangat sulit. Seperti masalah belajar, menulis adalah masalah serius bagi siswa karena siswa mengalami kemajuan dalam studi mereka, mereka diharapkan untuk menulis tentang apa yang telah mereka pelajari di kelas mereka. Namun, jika siswa tidak mengembangkan dan meningkatkan teknik menulis mereka, mereka tidak akan mampu mengikuti level mereka. Ada dua masalah penelitian dari penelitian ini. Pertama, Apa kesulitan siswa dalam menulis esai. Kedua, Bagaimana siswa mengatasi kesulitan dalam menulis esai. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, peneliti menggunakan triangulasi untuk validitas data dan fokus pada semester ketiga TBI di kelas E tahun akademik 2019/2020, pada kelas ini ada 36 siswa, dengan menggunakan wawancara dan dokumentasi sebagai pengumpulan data. Berdasarkan penelitian para siswa semester tiga di kelas E TBI, beberapa dari mereka mendapat beberapa kesulitan untuk membuat esaay yang baik, di antara kesulitan mereka adalah sulit untuk menulis bagian esai, tidak menggunakan pola organisasi dari esai, mendapatkan ide, menghubungkan paragraf pertama ke paragraf kedua, tidak menulis dengan struktur yang baik, menentukan topik dan membuat kalimat tesis, mengembangkan kalimat atau ide, memilih istilah bahasa dan struktur, tidak menggunakan kosakata dan tenses dengan baik . Dan kesulitan mengatasi dalam menulis esai seperti melatih keterampilan menulis, menghafal kosa kata, mempelajari tata bahasa dan tegang, meningkatkan pengetahuan, membaca dapat merujuk proses, meningkatkan struktur penulisan, menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, peneliti dapat memberikan beberapa saran. Bagi siswa, siswa harus memiliki motivasi tinggi untuk belajar menulis esai, untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam menulis. saran untuk peneliti, peneliti lebih memahami untuk membuat esai yang baik untuk menjadi sebagai referensi tambahan peneliti berikutnya.
