Abstract

Keywords: Pragmatic, Speech Act, Illocution, Retno Marsudi’s Speech, Critical Discourse Analysis This thesis discusses the use of illocutionary and its hidden meanings in Retno Marsudi’s speech on Israeli aggression towards Palestine at UN. This study aims to find out the hidden meanings in the Retno Marsudi’s speech which is using illocutionary speech act about the aggression done by Israel against Palestinian people, delivered at the United Nations assembly. In this study, the researcher used qualitative as the research approach and descriptive qualitative as the research design. The data sources of this research are the transcript of the speeches by Retno Marsudi on Israeli aggression against Palestine at the United Nations assembly and other references obtained from books, journals and articles, internets, or other significant sources. In collecting data, the researcher used two procedures, namely documents and observations. To obtain data, researchers used triangulation of theory. The theories used in this research were the theory of pragmatic because in line with the analysis of Marsudi’s speech, pragmatic is one of the linguistic branches, as stated by Geoffrey Leech, that studies about how language can be used in communication. Pragmatics is a study that considers the relationship between language and the context of its use in human interaction. After conducting the research, the researcher found that there are four types of illocutionary speech act used in Retno Marsudi’s speech on aggression by Israel against Palestine which are assertive, directive, commisive, and expressive illocutionary. The most dominant type of illocutionary used in the speech is the directive illocutionary, then assertive, commisive, and expressive illocutionary as the least used illocutionary in the speech. The hidden meanings derived from the speech using power relations as one of the critical dicourse analysis framework, a theory designed by Norman Fairclough to uncover how power dynamics and ideologies are embedded in language and how discourse both reflects and reinforces these power structures.
