Abstract

Keyword: Grammatical Errors, Mother Tongue English is international language studied by many people around the world, including Madura Island. English has 4 skills, namely reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Writing is the ability to express thoughts in written form in a second language or foreign language. In learning a foreign language or second language, difficulties are often encountered due to differences between the foreign language being studied and the learner's mother tongue. This study aims to analyzes what are the grammatical errors and how the mother tongue influences grammatical errors and how the mother tongue influences the English at fifth semester students of English teaching learning program of IAIN Madura, with Madurese as the students' mother tongue. This research uses qualitative methods to describe grammatical errors that are often made by fifth semester students majoring in English at IAIN Madura. The researcher chose a descriptive research design because he wanted to know the condition of the problem, namely the influence of mother tongue on grammatical errors in students' writing. The results of this study indicate that the types of grammatical errors made by students are omission, addition, misformation and misordering. Factors influenced by the mother tongue on students' errors in writing and some sentences, such as The grammatical structure of their mother tongue which is different from their second language can cause errors in the use of grammar, Students translate directly from their first language to English, Students tend to apply rules or patterns from their mother tongue to their second language, even though it is not right and others Based on the results of this study, lecturers need to provide more in�depth and structured explanations of grammatical concepts that often cause errors and emphasize teaching English grammar by providing examples of sentences that compare Madurese and English.
