Abstract

Grammar is a set of rules that define how word are combined and changed to form acceptable unit of meaning within language which is includes phonological, morphology, and syntax. Because grammar is important in communication, the students should master it. In fact, learning grammar is not easy for students. Most of the students find difficulties in learning grammar. The students are usually confused of rules and the use of tenses even in understanding the function of morpheme -ing where it can have two functions. The study was aimed at investigating the students’ difficulties in understanding the function of morpheme –ing and the factors of students’ difficulties in the Sixth semester of English Department in IAIN Madura. The study used qualitative research as approach and descriptive research as kind of research. The subject of this research is students of sixth semester of English departement of IAIN Madura while the object of this research is the student difficulties in understanding the morpheme-ing. The researcher used interview and documentation to collect the data about the students’ difficulties in understanding the function of morpheme –ing. From the finding, the researcher found that the students’ got difficulties in understanding the function of morpheme-ing. The students stated that the material of gerund and present participle was difficult to understand, it is because less of morphological understanding, especially the use of it when they have to use-ing as gerund and present participle. The factors of the students’ difficulties are caused by the students are less of understanding in affixation;they confused when they found the word added by affix include in gerund or present participle, forget the lesson even they have studied about morpheme they still get error in the function of morpheme –ing, lack of vocabulary, and they do not like Morphology or less motivation to learn Morphology. In conclusion, the sixth semester students of English Department in IAIN Madura still got difficulties in understanding the function of morpheme –ing for various factors. Tata bahasa adalah seperangkat aturan yang mendefinisikan bagaimana kata digabungkan dan diubah untuk membentuk unit makna yang dapat diterima dalam bahasa yang meliputi fonologis, morfologi, dan sintaksis. Karena tata bahasa penting dalam komunikasi, siswa harus menguasainya. Padahal, belajar tata bahasa tidaklah mudah bagi siswa. Sebagian besar siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam belajar tata bahasa. Para siswa biasanya bingung dengan aturan dan penggunaan tenses bahkan dalam memahami fungsi morfem di mana ia dapat memiliki dua fungsi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki kesulitan siswa dalam memahami fungsi morfem dan faktor-faktor kesulitan siswa di semester keenam Departemen Bahasa Inggris di IAIN Madura. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif sebagai pendekatan dan penelitian deskriptif sebagai jenis penelitian. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa semester enam jurusan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Madura sedangkan objek penelitian ini adalah siswa kesulitan dalam memahami morfem. Peneliti menggunakan wawancara dan dokumentasi untuk mengumpulkan data tentang kesulitan siswa dalam memahami fungsi morfem. Dari temuan tersebut, peneliti menemukan bahwa para siswa mendapat kesulitan dalam membedakan fungsi morfem. Para siswa menyatakan bahwa materi gerund dan participle sulit dipahami, karena pemahaman morfologis yang kurang, terutama penggunaannya ketika mereka harus menggunakan gerund dan participle hadir. Faktor-faktor kesulitan siswa disebabkan oleh siswa kurang pemahaman dalam afiksasi; mereka bingung ketika mereka menemukan kata yang ditambahkan oleh imbuhan termasuk dalam gerund atau participle hadir, lupakan pelajaran bahkan mereka telah belajar tentang morfem, mereka masih mendapatkan kesalahan dalam fungsi morfem, kurangnya kosakata, dan mereka tidak suka morfologi atau kurang motivasi belajar morfologi. Kesimpulannya, mahasiswa semester enam Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di IAIN Madura masih mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami fungsi morfing untuk berbagai faktor.
