Abstract

Key Words: Cooperative Learning, STAD, Narrative Text. There are four skills that must be mastered in learning a language, as well as English. The four skills are reading, speaking, listening and writing. Writing is one of the most difficult skills for students to master. Therefore, teachers are required to apply innovative and creative learning models such as cooperative learning. Cooperative learning is a learning strategy with a number of students as members of small groups with different ability levels. STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) is one type of cooperative learning model that is very effective to be applied in teaching and learning process. This study aims to describe how the implementation of the cooperative learning model type STAD in teaching narrative text and the advantages and disadvantages of applying the STAD model in learning. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The subjects of this research are the English teacher and first grade students of MA Az Zaytun, Sampang. The data were gotten from observation during teaching and learning pocess, interviews and documentations. The result of this research showed that teacher implemented STAD model in teaching narrative text through several steps, that are: Teacher explaining the material, dividing students into group, distributing worksheets to the group, giving the students quizzes to be done individually, calculating the group score, giving reward to the winning group then students present the individual taks with the group. Dealing with the implementation of STAD in teaching, there are some advantages obtained, such as students become more active during the teaching and learning process, develop the student ability to express thoughts and be able to respect the others opinions, strengthen the friendship and student teamwork and increase student motivation. Besides that, there’s also disadvantage by implementing the STAD model, that is inability of group members to establish harmonious teamwork. It is suggested for teacher to supervise the process of collaboration in the discussion process carried out by students so it can establish good teamwork among them. And for students should be able to compromise, responsible to their group and their task, eliminate selfishness and establish good relations with the group members.
