Abstract

Keywords: Brain Dominance, Vocabulary Mastery, ESL, Language Acquisition. The process of language acquisition is a complex phenomenon. In acquiring language, one of the most important factors is none other than vocabulary. Vocabulary is an essential element of language processing in language acquisition. In first language acquisition, the dominant hemisphere plays a huge role in vocabulary and language processing. While in second language acquisition, the relationship is less clear and may be different. This research aims to investigate the potential relationship between brain dominance and English vocabulary mastery among second language learners at the sixth semester student of IAIN Madura. This research used a quantitative-correlational design. The data were collected from total participants of 87 English learners through Questionnaire, Test and Documentation. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the data. Statistical analysis revealed that the p-value (Sig.) of 0.002 is below the significance level of 0.05, suggesting that there is indeed a significant relationship. Further analysis also showed that among second language learners, whole-brained is superior than left and right-brained. This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that whole-brained engages both hemispheres of the brain, effectively utilizing the full capabilities rather than depending on one hemisphere. However, the effectiveness of learning approach that can stimulate both hemispheres of the brain is mostly unknown, therefore, further research is suggested.
