Abstract

Key words: TOEFL, Listening Section, Students’ Difficulties TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign language) is the most popular test for non-native English users, that normally caused difficulties to who ever passed it, especially for students. The difficulties classified into internal and external factors. Internal factors include cultural differences and different accents. While in external factors include quality of audio, unfamiliar vocabulary, length and speech rate, and lack of silency. In this research, there are two research focuses, they were: what are the students’ difficulties in listening section of TOEFL EPT at the 6th semester of TBI IAIN Madura and what are the students’ strategies to overcome the students’ difficulties in answering listening section of TOEFL EPT at the 6th semester of TBI IAIN Madura? The objective of this research are to describe the students’ difficulties in listening section and to describe the students’ strategies to overcome the students’ difficulties in answering listening section of TOEFL EPT at the 6th semester of TBI IAIN Madura. This research was qualitative design and used descriptive analysis. The location of this research was at the 6th semester of TBI IAIN Madura. Data sources in this study are obtained from several respondents namely the 6th semester students of TBI at IAIN Madura through Interviews, observations and documentation. On the other hand, the validity of data is triangulation of source. The findings of research from the results of observation and interview to some students at the 6th semester of TBI IAIN Madura were devided into two kind were internal and external factors. The internal factors: Cultural differences is the problem that faced by students because the topic talk about American in generally that we know it properly as Indonesian, accent can also affect students in understanding the topics because the accent that always heared by students can develop student’s habit. The external factors: quality of audio is one of the difficulty faced by students mostly caused the internet network and make the audio is unclear or cannot be played and it is wasted the take-takers’ time, unfamiliar vocabulary is the root of difficulty that faced by most of students and caused confusion in comprehend the topic, length and speech rate caused students’ difficulty because long topic and speech rate from the native can interfere the student’s concentration, and lack of silency can be difficult for students to maintaining the concentrationin foreign language and can hinder students’ undrestanding. Meanwhile the strategies included 7 types of strategies were: repeating strategy, matching the words, used a mental note, more practice, guessing randomly, paying attention, and built confidence.
