Abstract

Keywords: Reading, Islamic Moderation, English Text Islamic moderation comes as a solution to the problem of radicalism and interfaith conflict in Indonesia. Islamic moderation is a middle-ground way of religion according to the notion of moderation. This is done by implementing Islamic moderation in higher education institutions, one of which is IAIN Madura. One of the lecturers in the PAI department applies the values of Islamic moderation in the Reading class. There are three research focuses in this study. First, the researcher analyzes how the lecturer applies the value of Islamic moderation in Reading class. Second, what are the roles of the lecturer in the class. Third, what are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching Reading using Islamic moderation English text. This research is qualitative research that uses a descriptive approach. In collecting data, the researcher used three methods, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. Then analyze the data with five processes, namely organizing the data, identifying the data, coding the data, generating descriptions and themes, and representing the themes and descriptions. For data validity checks, the researcher employs methodological triangulation techniques. The result of this study is that the PAI Reading class is a type of intensive Reading class in which students engage with what they read, respond to the content of Islamic moderation English texts, the lecturer makes full use of text, and tailors the assignments to the subject: the Reading class assignment design is scanning. Four values of Islamic moderation are found in the text, namely national commitment, tolerance, tahadhdhur (civilized), and tathawwur wa ibtikar (innovative and dynamic). The lecturer has three roles in the classroom, those are educator, administrator, and facilitator. There are three advantages and three disadvantages of teaching Reading using Islamic moderation English text. The advantages are the students are exposed to authentic languages, the enhancement of students’ reading abilities, and the improvement of students’ vocabulary. The disadvantages are the students have difficulty in reading comprehension, the students have a lack of communication, and the students have difficulty with motivation.
