Abstract
Kata Kunci : English Language, Students’ Problem. The backround of this study is motivated by problems regarding understanding English experienced by students especially in vocational school Al Ihsan Sampang. Based on the pre-observation, the researcher wants to know what problems that usually faced by the students when the teaching and learning process was conducted in the classroom. The lack of student’s motivation might be one of the main problems of learning English. Students’ motivation can come from outside such as association with friends, family conditions and the environment where they live is less supportive of that direction. Second, is the large number of students who consider English a difficult subject. This may be due to the students' previous minimal knowledge of English and the striking differences between English and Indonesian, especially in the pronunciation of vocabulary and sentence patterns they use. Therefore, this research is aimed at describing the factors caused students difficult in understanding English lesson. The focuses of this study are: 1) What is the factors causing problems faced by English language students in understanding English lessons at senior high school SMK AL-IHSAN?, 2) How to solve problems faced by English language students in understanding English lessons at senior high school SMK AL-IHSAN?. Based on the research focus, the purposes of this study are 1) To describe the factors causing problems faced by English language students in understanding English lessons at senior high school SMK AL-IHSAN. And 2) To describe how to solve problems faced by English language students in understanding English lessons at senior high school SMK AL-IHSAN. The approach which is used in by researcher is qualitative research since the data will describe the central phenomena without any statistical process, while the kind of the research in this study is descriptive analysis method. The data in this study was obtained by conducting interviews with participants about teacher competencies supported by an observation checklist to observe the results in detail and documentation to get the data descriptive. So the data are collected by doing interview, observation, and documentation. The researcher used triangulation of source and triangulation of method as the data validity. The result of this study show that: First, the researcher found students’ difficulties come from the students themselves. The difficulties that students experienced included linguistic problems and psychological problems. In linguistic problems, there are several aspects such as a lack of vocabulary and a lack of pronunciation. In psychological problems, there are three aspects, which include lack of confidence, shyness, and fear of making a mistake.
