Abstract

Keyword : Analysis, Pronunciation, Error Pronunciation constitutes one of the most relevant aspects of oral communication. The quality and ‘correctness’ one of pronunciation impact, to a large extent, the intelligibility and comprehensibility of speech. ‘Good’ pronunciation contributes to successful and effective communication. Pronunciation errors may lead to serious breakdowns in communication, more detrimental to its outcome than grammatical or lexical ones. This study was anticipated to contribute to the advancement of English language instruction, particularly in the area of English pronunciation teaching. It aims to introduce changes and insights into English pronunciation instruction following an analysis of students' pronunciation errors. Teachers will have the opportunity to refine and develop new strategies for teaching pronunciation. Additionally, students will become aware of their pronunciation errors and endeavor to rectify them, thereby enhancing their proficiency in pronouncing English words. Conducted at MA Nurulhuda Boarding School, this research adopts a qualitative descriptive research method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and direct recordings while teachers instructed students to read English texts aloud one by one. Subsequently, the researcher analyzed the data gathered through these three methods and obtained the findings. Based on the discussions, there are three types of errors caused by students at MA Nurulhuda Pekandangan on reading an English text. With the percentage results and the amount of each type of error: substitution 78%, additions 10%, and deletions 10%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the most frequently occurring error is substitution error. The cause of pronunciation errors are due to the influence of the mother tongue, because the students are not yet familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and students' habit of disregarding proper and accurate pronunciation when encountering new vocabulary as indicated in the dictionary. This research is expected to help students correct the errors they make and avoid making the same errors in the future, so they can have good pronunciation for quality communication. It is also hoped that teachers will pay more attention to students' pronunciation and develop better teaching methods, especially in pronunciation.
