Abstract

Keywords : Punishment strategy, speaking mastery Speaking is one of the skills or abilities in English to express opinions, comments and the ability to ask and answer questions. In this case, a teacher applies punishment strategies like speaking in front of a lot of people aimed at actions against students who disobey the rules like not speaking English when talking to their friends. The punishment applied in this course is speaking in front of a lot of people with a free theme as it is discussing about family, friends or something around them.These punishment strategies train students for discipline in obedience to the rules as well as train students' confidence to perform in front of many people. This research consists of two research focuses. First, about what kinds of punishment strategy are used by the teacher on the students’ speaking mastery at Institute Prima Bhakti Course Pamekasan. Second, about how does the teacher use the punishment strategy on the students’ speaking mastery at Institute Prima Bhakti Course Pamekasan. The researchers used a qualitative approach with a type of descriptive approach. The instruments used are observations, interviews and documentation. The validity of the data is verified through triangulation. Researchers use triangulations of data sources, triangulations of technique and triangulation of time because it requires researchers to search for and examine data from different sources with the same techniques and planned time using the same methods to understand data and information. Based on the results of this research, it is suggested that the punishment strategy used by teachers in this course is a punishment strategy in the form of speaking in front of many people with a free theme that aims to train the student's fluency in speaking English and train the mental and confidence of the student to perform in public. A teacher applies this punishment because it is an educational punishment for the student.
