Abstract

Keywords: Pronunciation Error, Alveolar consonant, and Pronunciation. Having good pronunciation is one of the important target for everyone who speaks English. Everyone will interest to talk with people who have good pronunciation, pronunciation is definitely the biggest thing that people notice when other people are speaking English. Speaking without good pronunciation will give bad effect to the listener, it will make misunderstanding between speaker and listener. One way to make a good pronunciation is articulation. One of articluations is Alveolar consonant. In this research, there are two research focuses. They are what are the pronunciation errors of alveolar consonant often made by the student of the third semester of English teaching learning program at IAIN Madura, and why do the students of the third semester of English teaching learning program at IAIN Madura made the pronunciation errors of Alveolar consonant? The research was qualitative research and used descriptive research. The location of this research was at IAIN Madura. The researcher collect the data by using observation, interview, and documentation. The data is collected from the members reading performance. The research finding shows that mostly the students did not pronounce Alveolar consonant well. It means that the students often make some errors on pronouncing Alveolar consonant sounds. The researcher also found 2 factors which give certain effect toward member's errors in pronunciation, those are Interlingual errors and intralingual errors. While the effects of the students’ pronunciation error are the listener will get misunderstanding, the speaker will stuck, and the speaker will be shy and nervous. From the findings, this research is suggested for the lecturer should give more attention to the students about how to pronounce word correctly. The suggestion for the students, they should be more careful and more diligent in learning English in order that they know which is the correct and incorrect pronunciation. For the next researcher, they can use this research to conduct the similar research in different aspect.
