Abstract

Keywords: Grammarly, Automated Writing Evaluation, English Text. Writing is often considered difficult for some students who are learning a language, especially if the language is a foreign language, of course, the writing structure is different from their mother tongue. Good writing usually used good grammar or writing structure, so someone who writes needs to learn the grammar of that language. Grammarly is an easy tool that is very helpful for both students and teachers in writing by checking spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors and is useful for correcting writing to make it more readable, clear, precise, effective, error-free and has a high degree of accuracy. This research has the problem of study, that is “Do the students have better writing skills after using the Grammarly as automated writing evaluation tools?” and “Is the Grammarly effective as automated writing evaluation tools in writing English text of tenth-grade at SMKN 1 Pamekasan?”. To know the result of this research, the researcher has formulated a problem study into the discussion. The subject of this research is the students of SMKN 1 Pamekasan. The researcher used pre-experimental design using pre-test and post-test. Because the researcher wanted to compare an effect of before and after treatment. The population was 19 students with the instrument in this research who were writing test. The researcher collected data through pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive statistical analysis, calculating the mean score and t-test. The result of the research indicated that the mean score in the post-test is higher than the pre-test score (92,53>83,00). The result of t-test (7,261) was higher than t table (2,101). The result showed that there was a significant difference in the students writing skills by using the Grammarly as an automated writing evaluation tools. It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha ) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0 ) is rejected. The researcher concluded that the students have better writing skills after using Grammarly as an automated writing evaluation tools and Grammarly was effective in improving the writing skills in writing the descriptive text of the tenth-grade at SMKN 1 Pamekasan. So, the researcher hopes that the research could be used a contribution to the English teacher to solve the students problem in writing English text and to which Grammarly can make students more independent in writing and no longer need help or feedback from a teacher and AI applications, such as Grammarly
