Abstract
Key Words: Eliciting Technique, English Teacher Speaking skills are important skills that need to be taught by a teacher. Therefore, the teacher should have an effective technique for teaching speaking skills one of the technique is elicitation question. Elicitation question is English teacher’s way to start the teaching learning process. Giving appropriate elicitation question can attract the student participants in joining teaching learning process. It also gives students more chances to know the topic learning with their own understanding from teachers’ elicitation question. By this case the researcher is interested to conduct a research with a research problem 1) how the teacher at the ninth grade junior high school of C Class in SMP Sabilillah Sampang implements elicitation technique to build interactions between teacher in English and students in order to improve the students’ speaking skill, 2) what types of elicitation technique used by the English teacher in teaching speaking skill at the ninth grade junior high school C Class of SMP Sabilillah Sampang. This research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive as the research design. The data collections used are the results of observations, interview, and documents. Moreover, the instruments of the research are observational field notes, interview, and English lesson plan. The result of fourth observations there are: elicitation combined with photo or picture, elicitation combined with game, elicitation combined with dialogue, elicitation combined with text, and elicitation combined with non-verbal language. There are ways to use the elicitation question combined with pictures or photos. First, deciding, taking the appropriate pictures and showing the photos or pictures while eliciting students through dialogue. Second, asking students to think of the picture given to analyze and confirming the truth. There are ways to use the elicitation combined with game. First, deciding the appropriate games with the topic learning. Second, giving the games, inserting the clues and eliciting students through asking question. There are ways to use the elicitation with dialogue, they are deciding the topic lesson and building the dialogue that is related with the topic lesson. There ways to use elicitation combined with text. First, considering and deciding the appropriate text based on topic learning and student’ need. Second, asking students to analyze what kind of text while eliciting them with dialogue. Third, confirming to students what text that they analyzed. There are ways to use elicitation combined with non-verbal language. First, deciding and giving the appropriate nonverbal language based on teachers’ instruction and explanation. Second, confirming the teachers’ expectation to the students.
