Abstract

Keyword: Reading; Skimming; Scanning Reading is the key to gaining a better understanding and insight into the world. Getting information efficiently requires the right technique. The technique must be one that can help the reader to gain knowledge quickly while being precise on the main idea or idea of reading. Skimming and scanning reading techniques are reading techniques that can help readers to get information quickly so that readers do not need to take a very long time to get the information they need. This research focuses on knowing the reading ability of fourthsemester students majoring in Tadris English (TBI) at Madura State Islamic Institute with a focus on skimming and scanning reading techniques and the importance of skimming and scanning reading techniques for them. This research is necessary considering that students have a very close relationship with reading. For them reading is a skill that they must have, as well as they must be able to read efficiently and effectively so that they can get information accurately and quickly. This research is descriptive qualitative research conducted by collecting data through documentation and interviews. The informants of this research are fourth-semester TBI students majoring in English in the academic year 2022-2023. As a result, the researcher found that in the teaching process, the lecturer prepared the material carefully until the delivery of the material well. Skimming and scanning materials are carried out on the fourth and sixth meetings of the lecture meeting. Learning is carried out by the method of delivering material by lecture and then continuing with exercises for students to perform skimming and scanning reading techniques. As a result, TBI students have a good understanding of reading with skimming and scanning techniques, but in daily reading, students rarely use them. This is because students find it difficult to use both techniques and rarely use them unless there is an assignment with a deadline that is close. In general, they argue that skimming and scanning reading techniques are reading techniques that can help them get information so these two techniques have an important role in their lives as students. These reading techniques make it easy for them to absorb information.
