iv ABSTRACT Fajar Sodri. 2020. Students’ Confidence in Deciding Position in Performing Speaking Activity in the Third Semester at IAIN Madura, Thesis, English Teaching Learning Program (TBI), Tarbiyah Faculty, The State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Madura, Advisor: Hasan Basri, M.Pd. Keywords: Speaking, Position, Confidence Speaking is habitual activity of every human that producing interaction or communication everyday with other people. Speaking class needs careful management to choose which treatment that appropriate to improve the students speaking skill based on the class situation. In speaking class especially for the third semester at IAIN MADURA, the teacher manages the classroom by let the students to decide the way they would perform their speaking performance whether standing or sitting position in which they are confidence to deliver it. To explore the research, the researcher formulate two questions; 1. How does the students deciding position in performing a speaking activity in the third semester at IAIN Madura? 2. How does the students’ confidence in performing a speaking activity in the third semester at IAIN Madura? This research is descriptive qualitative research that has aims to find out the student’s confidence by investigate student in deciding position in performing speaking activity. The researcher is the key instrument to collect the data by takes a position to be non- participant. The research focuses on the third semester because they have speaking class and consider to be more expert the lower semester. The data are taken by non participant observation, semi structured interview and documentation. Then it will be analyzed by data reduction, data display and verification. To validate the data, the researcher use triangulation data source and techniques. Based on the results of the data exposure in the discussion points, the students mostly chose standing than sitting position when they speak. Students who choose the sitting position tend to be passive unlike students who choose the standing position, those who choose the standing position look more active and relaxed when they speak in front of the class. The students' decision to stand in performing their speaking skill influences their confidence. Those who stand in performing speaking show more confident. They feel more confidence and relax because they can explore their vocabulary to speak in front of their friend freely. It is suggested that the teacher should know the position that is appropriate with the student especially in speaking. For the students, are to choose variants of position that is easy to deliver their idea. The students also should spend some more time to practice in front of public to be more confident in delivering the speaking activities. v ABSTRAK Fajar Sodri, 2020, Kepercayaan Siswa dalam Menentukan Posisi dalam Melakukan Aktivitas Berbicara pada Semester 3 di IAIN Madura, Skripsi, Tadris Bahasa Inggris (TBI), Fakultas Tarbiyah, Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Madura, Pembimbing: Hasan Basri, M. Pd. Kata Kunci: Berbicara, Posisi dan Percaya diri. Berbicara adalah kegiatan kebiasaan setiap manusia yang menghasilkan interaksi atau penyatuan sehari-hari dengan orang lain. Kelas berbicara memerlukan menejemen yang cermat untuk memilih perawatan mana yang sesuai untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa berdasarkan situasi kelas. Dalam kelas berbicara terutama untuk semester ketiga di IAIN Madura, guru mengelola kelas dengan membiarkan siswa untuk memutuskan cara yang akan melakukan kinerja berbicara mereka apakah posisi berdiri atau duduk di mana mereka percaya diri untuk menyampaikannya. Untuk mengeksplorasi penelitian, peneliti merumuskan dua pertanyaan; 1. Bagaimana para siswa menentukan posisi dalam melakukan aktivitas berbicara pada semester ketiga di IAIN Madura? 2. Bagaimana kepercayaan diri siswa dalam melakukan kegiatan berbicara pada semester ketiga di IAIN Madura? Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui kepercayaan diri siswa dengan menyelidiki posisi siswa dalam melakukan kegiatan berbicara. Peneliti adalah instrumen kunci untuk mengumpulkan data dengan mengambil posisi untuk tidak berpartisipasi. Fokus penelitian pada semester ketiga karena mereka memiliki kelas berbicara dan mempertimbangkan untuk menjadi lebih ahli di semester bawah. Data diambil dengan observasi non partisipan, wawancara semi terstruktur dan dokumentasi. Kemudian, dianalisis dengan reduksi data, tampilan data, dan verifikasi. Agar data terbukti valid, peneliti menggunakan sumber data triangulasi dan teknik. Berdasarkan hasil pemaparan data pada poin pembahasan, siswa lebih banyak memilih posisi berdiri daripada posisi duduk ketika mereka berbicara. Siswa yang memilih posisi duduk cenderung pasif tidak seperti siswa yang memilih posisi berdiri, mereka yang memilih posisi berdiri terlihat lebih aktif dan santai ketika mereka berbicara di depan kelas. Keputusan siswa untuk berdiri dalam melakukan penguasaan keterampilan berbicara mereka kepercayaan diri mereka. Orang-orang yang berdiri dalam melakukan pertunjukan menunjukkan rasa percaya diri. Mereka merasa lebih percaya diri dan santai karena mereka dapat mengeksplorasi kosa kata mereka untuk berbicara di depan teman mereka dengan bebas. Disarankan bahwa guru harus mengetahui posisi yang sesuai dengan siswa khususnya dalam berbicara. Bagi para siswa adalah memilih varian posisi yang mudah untuk menyampaikan ide mereka. Para siswa juga harus memperbanyak latihan di depan umum agar lebih percaya diri dalam berbicara.
