Abstract

Keywords: Slang, WhatsApp, Chatting Slang language is a popular language that is usually used by millennial teenagers, slang is the identity of teenagers. The use of slang today is not only in spoken speech but also written language on social media as well as personal chat on WhatsApp. Slang is a language variation characterized by a new-found and rapidly changing vocabulary. Slang is group and secret in nature, it gives the impression that slang is the secret language of criminals, when in fact it is not criminals. There are two problems of study in this research. The first, what are the types of the slang used on WhatsApp personal chatting by TBI students at IAIN Madura. The second what are the meanings of the slang used on WhatsApp personal chatting by TBI students at IAIN Madura The researcher uses descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study is students at TBI in IAIN Madura. Meanwhile, the data is collected from interview and documentation. To analysis data, researcher use data identifying, data classifying, data describing, drawing a conclusion. While to check the validity of data the researcher used data source triangulation. The researcher would like to make conclusion of this research, from the findings of the types and meaning of the slang used on WhatsApp personal chatting by TBI students at IAIN Madura it can be stated that slang has its own meaning, unique and different word formations are also found in this variety of languages, such as abbreviation, it is types created by pronouncing the first letters of any or all the words in a phrase or title as single word. Abbreviation is divided into 2, initialism and acronym. Initialism is imitation words or producing by imitating certain sounds. Acronyms are new words formed from the initial letters of a set of other words. The second is blending. Blending is the combination of two separate forms to produce a single new types is also present in the process called blending. Clipping is the removal or cutting of parts of the alphabet. Interjection is used for express feelings of happiness, surprise, sadness and soon. Based on the research discussion, there are several types of slang use by TBI students at IAIN Madura. Slang divided into five parts, namely; 9 initialism, 4 acronym, 2 blending, 8 clipping, 4 interjection. The meaning of the slang used on WhatsApp personal chatting by TBI students at IAIN Madura are textual meaning and contextual meaning.
