Abstract

Key Words: Speech act, “The Translator” Movie In the study of language, what people do by saying something is called speech acts. Sometimes it has deep meaning to hearer. Speech acts is not only found in everyday life but it also can find in the film. This research concerns with speech acts produced by the main character in The Translator movie. The aims of this research are to describe the types of speech acts and to describe the function of the speech acts in The Translator movie. George Yule’s theory is applied in this research as the major theory. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research which focused on description. The whole data analyzed is the types of speech acts on The Translator Movie based on George Yule’s perspective. In collecting the data the researcher used observation and documentation. Then for checking the validy of data, the researcher used triangulation; triangulation of data source, triangulation of technique and triangulation of time. Based on observing the movie, the researcher found 14 locutions acts, 21 illocutionary acts, 16 perlocutionary acts. In general the function of speech act, the researcher found 8 representative, 19 expressives, 26 directives and 2 commissives that occurred in the dialog of “The translator” movie.
