Abstract
Keywords: Metaphor, Adele Adkins’s song Lyrics. Metaphor is figure of speech uses a phrase to be applied to something that is not true. Figurative language is commonly utilized in songs since it is well worded in the song lyrics. The song is an arrangement of words that are pitched coming from a poem, which is then given an additional tone to make it interesting to enjoy. In expressing experiences, songwriters create puns and language styles so that the lyrics of the song have its own charm as well as the metaphors contained in Adele's song lyrics and the meaning of metaphors contained in Adele's song lyrics. This research consists of two research objectives, first is to identify what the types of metaphors in sellected Adele Adkins’s song lyrics in the album “30”, second is to interpret the meaning of the metaphor types in sellected Adele Adkins’s song lyrics in the album “30”. This research aims to look for types of metaphors from Adele's chosen songs and interpret their meaning based on the theory of Lakoff and Johnson. This research is library research with Hermeneutics approach so that the research question answered by reveal the types of metaphor and the meaning of Adele's song lyrics through the interpretation of the language used in song lyrics, it becomes the meaning or message that the songwriter wants to convey to the listener. The metaphor in Adele’s song analyzed by using George Lakoff and Mark Jhonson theory. Based on the result of the data, the researcher found there are twenty two metaphor in the sellected Adele’s song lirycs in album “30”. The total data of metaphor in each type are 11 structural metaphor, 3 orientational metaphor, and 17 ontological metaphor. Based on the result, it can be shown that the dominant metaphor in Adele's song lyrics is the ontological metaphor is more dominant. The meaning of metaphor in this songs are commonly about feelings, himself, or something by replacing the word concept with another concept from a familiar ontological metaphor. The dominant type of meaning is connotative meaning. Connotative meaning mostly found in this song lyric, because the singer refers to expressing his feeling by using not purely the meaning of a content or the meaning of a word in a dictionary to draw in the listener's imagination while the listener hears the song lyrics. The implication of this research is to have an awareness and appreciation of the metaphorical aspect in everyday language and also in the educational aspect.
