Abstract

Gerund is one of part in grammar of English which is made of –ing form of a verb used as a noun. While Present participle is also part of grammar which is same –ing form but used an adjective. Recently the researcher often find the students of Bright English of Talented Program do mistake on distinguishing gerund and present participle. They do it because they lack grammar ability. There are three problems of study in this research. The first, What are the students difficulties on distinguishing gerund and present participle at Bright English of Talented Program (BETTER) in IAIN Madura. The second, What are the factors of the students difficulties on distinguishing gerund and present participle at Bright English of Talented Program (BETTER) in IAIN Madura. And the last, how to overcome of the students difficulties on distinguishing gerund and present participle at Bright English of Talented Program (BETTER) in IAIN Madura. The researcher used descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study is students at Bright English of Talented Program (BETTER) in IAIN Madura. Meanwhile, the data is collected from interview and documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher used data reduction, data display and verification. While to check the validity of data the researcher used data source trianggulation. The result of this research, the biggest difficulties of the students on distinguishing gerund and present participle is difficulties in determining functions of gerund and present participle, the next, difficulties in determining meaning of gerund and present participle, after that difficulties in determining formula of gerund and present participle, the difficulties because gerund and present participle are the same –ing form, and the last, misunderstanding the term of present participle. All of the difficulties happened because they have many factors so that they find the difficulties on distinguishing gerund and present particile. The biggest factor is because the students lack grammar ability. Then, based on the difficulties and those factors there are some ways to overcome the those problems used of the students. Finally based on the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the students at Bright English of Talented Program (BETTER) found the difficulties on distinguishing gerund and present participle because they less grammar ability especially about gerund and present participle, so they must study harder about grammar and they must do the exercises. Gerund adalah salah satu bagian dari tata bahasa dalam bahasa Inggris yang mana terbuat dari bentuk –ing dari kata kerja dan digunakan sebagai kata benda. Sedangkan present participle adalah juga salah satu bagian dari tata bahasa dalam bahasa Inggris yang mana sama-sama terbuat dari bentuk –ing tetapi digunakan sebagai kata sifat. Akhir-akhir ini, peneliti sering menemukan mahasiswa di BETTER melakukan kesalahan dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle. Mereka melakukan seperti itu karena kemampuan grammar mereka masih kurang. Ada tiga masalah penelitian dalam penelitian ini. Pertama, apa saja kesulitan-kesulitan mahasiwa dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle di BETTER di IAIN Madura. Kedua, Apa saja faktor-faktor kesulitan mahasiswa dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle di BETTER di IAIN Madura. Dan yang terakhir, bagaimana menyelesaikan kesulitan dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle di BETTER di IAIN Madura. Peneliti menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa di BETTER IAIN Madura. Sementara itu data dikumpulkan dari wawancara dan dokumentasi. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan wawancra dan dokumentasi. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan data reduksi, data display, dan verifikasi. Selain itu, untuk memeriksa keabsahan data, peneliti menggunakan trianggulasi sumber data. Hasil penelitian ini, kesulitan paling besar yang ditemukan oleh mahasiwa adalah kesulitan dalam menentukan fungsi-fungsi dari gerund dan present participle, selanjutnya yaitu kesulitan dalam menentukan makna dari gerund dan present participle, kemudian kesulitan dalam menentukan rumus dari gerund dan present participle, kesulitan karena gerund dan present participle sama-sama bentuk –ing, dan yang terakhir kesalah pahaman dalam menentukan definisi present participle. Semua kesulitan-kesulitan mahasiswa itu bisa terjadi karena mahasiwa memiliki banyak faktor sehingga mereka menemukan kesulitan dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle. Dan faktor yang paling besar adalah karena kurangnya kemampuan grammar mereka. Kemudian dismping kesulitan dan faktor-faktor tersebut, ada beberapa cara untuk mengatasi kesulitan dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle yang dilakukan oleh mahasiwa. Terakhir, berdasarkan dari penelitian ini, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa para mahasiswa di BETTER IAIN Madura menemukan kesulitan dalam membedakan gerund dan present participle karena kurangnya kemampuan mereka dalam grammar jadi mereka harus lebih giat lagi belajar grammar dan mengerjakan soal-soal.
