Abstract
Keywords:Gist Strategy, Descriptive Text, Reading Comprehension Reading comprehension is understanding a text. In reading comprehension, strategies are needed that allow students to process the writing in the text to make it easier for students to understand the message or information conveyed by the author. However, sometimes, students need help with reading comprehension due to a lack of vocabulary and confusion in understanding the whole text. In reading comprehension, teachers can use many strategies to help students learn to read. One is the GIST (Generating interaction schemata and text) Strategy, which helps students understand the information in the text. The focus of this research is the first How is the implementation of the GIST strategy in teaching English descriptive text in reading comprehension for grade 4th at SDN Bandaran 3 Pamekasan. The second is the strengths and weaknesses of implementing the GIST strategy in teaching English descriptive text in reading comprehension for grade 4th students at SDN Bandaran 3 Pamekasan. The researcher uses qualitative research as the approach of research and descriptive research as a kind of research. Sources of data are English teacher for 4th grade students at SDN Bandaran 3 Pamekasan. The researcher used interviews, observation, and documentation to collect the data. The research is analyzed using a reduction, display, and conclusion. In addition, to determine the validity of the data, the researcher uses source triangulation. The results showed that in its implementation, in the first and second meetings, the teacher implemented the GIST strategy similarly. The teacher started the lesson with warm-up activities and motivational exercises, then continued with the material explanation. After that, the teacher involved students in group discussions to summarize the text into 20 words that included the text's main idea. Then the students present the summarized result in front of the class. Post-teaching activities include summarizing the learning materials and feedback sessions. The implementation of the GIST strategy proved to be effective, benefiting both teachers and students. However, some challenges were identified, such as time constraints and the need for students to understand the text quickly. Nonetheless, teacher support and creating a conducive learning environment helped to increase the effectiveness of this strategy implementation
