Abstract

Keywords: Writing, Essay and Collocation At Titik Nol English Course, placed in Pare, there is a program namely pre-intermediate program. This program is always taken by the people who want to learn about intermediate skill of English comprehensively.The students joining pre-intermediate writing class is required to write an essay with the topic given by the tutor and give a feedback after they hand in the essay. Most of the students have some difficulties about the collocation because sometimes they do not put the proper combination of some words. Of course, that will decrease the quality of their writing. The research problem of this research is (1) What kinds of collocation students usually use in their essay writing at pre-intermediate students Titik Nol English Course Pare? (2) What kind of collocation mistakes students make in their essay writing at pre-intermediate students Titik Nol English Course Pare?. Based on the research problems, the researcher is aimed to (1) to know what kinds of collocation students usually use in their writing at pre-intermediate students Titik Nol English Course Pare. (2) To identify what kinds of collocation mistakes students make in their writing at pre-intermediate students Titik Nol English Course Pare. The researcher employs qualitative research since the data is presented in the form of words instead of number. The data were collected by documentation. The researcher collected the result of students’ writing and analyze the collocation used in their writing. The researcher reduces those data, presents in the table form and descriptive form, than draws the conclusion. The researcher used content analysis to analyse the data because the data is in the form of writing. There are two results of this research. First, the researcher found the kinds of collocation which is usually used by the students is ‘adjective-noun collocation’. Second, the researcher found that the kinds of collocation mistakes that the students usually made in their writing is also ‘adjective-noun collocation
