Abstract
Keywords: Filled Pauses, Students’ Communication and English Department Filled pauses is one of disfluencies in speaking that occur spontaneously, like say “umm, ehm, uhh”, but when the speaker say it there is no meaning. It happens just to show if the speaker does not finish in speech. There are several word that include in filled pauses are “I think, oke, yeah, you know”. The researcher has two formulation, first what types of filled pauses that happen in students’ communication at fifth semester of TBI in IAIN Madura? Second how do they use filled pauses in students’ communication at fifth semester of TBI in IAIN Madura?, meanwhile the purpose of this research are first, to know types of filled pauses that happen in students’ communication at fifth semester of TBI in IAIN Madura, second to know how they use filled pauses in students’ communication at fifth semester of TBI in IAIN Madura. This study is a qualitative study using descriptive method of analysis. Researcher uses the technique of interview and observation in obtaining data from participation, namely in students’ communication at fifth semester of TBI in IAIN Madura, which is the object of this research. In addition, to interview the researcher also uses documentary images of interviews made online via WhatsApp applications and observation in field. The result of this study shows types of filled pauses that happen in students’ communication at fifth semester of TBI in IAIN Madura is Unlexicalized pauses, the reason it happens naturally and lack of vocabularies. Furthermore, they use filled pauses as time creating device and attention giving device to help them in communication and think what will say. Hopefully this research can be useful to add a knowledge and manage filled pauses in speaking.
